Bookkeeper and accountant in Kentish Town

Self Assessment, year-end accounts, Corporation Tax and monthly bookkeeping for the shops, cafés, trades and freelancers of Kentish Town, from a small practice based nearby in Camden.

Kentish Town has a high street that still feels local. Along Kentish Town Road and Leighton Road there are independent shops, cafés and takeaways, the Forum brings in crowds on gig nights, and the streets behind are full of people running a business from a spare room: plumbers, electricians, decorators, designers, writers. A lot of that work is done alone, which usually means the paperwork gets done late at night, or not at all.

We are a small accountancy practice based a little to the south in Camden, London. We prepare and file your Self Assessment tax return, and if you trade as a limited company, your year-end accounts and Corporation Tax return, completed by the Chartered Accountant on our team. Underneath both sits monthly bookkeeping, so every return starts from records that are already right.

Tax returns for sole traders and freelancers

If you work for yourself, most of your tax year comes down to one form. The work is in the records behind it. Every invoice, every material and tool, your phone and a reasonable share of household costs if you work from home all need recording before they can count.

  • Income from every job or invoice, matched to your bank
  • Materials, tools and van costs recorded as you go
  • Household costs for working from home claimed on a sensible basis
  • Your return prepared and sent to you to approve before it is filed

Accounts and Corporation Tax for limited companies

If your trade or consultancy runs as a limited company, it has its own deadlines: accounts at Companies House 9 months after the year end, Corporation Tax 9 months and 1 day after it, and the company tax return within 12 months. We prepare the accounts, file the return and keep the dates for you, with the statutory work completed by our Chartered Accountant.

Shops and cafés on Kentish Town Road

A shop or café runs on lots of small transactions and a few large ones: daily takings, supplier invoices, rent, utilities and the occasional piece of equipment. We record and reconcile them each month, so you can see your profit and your cash position, not just your bank balance. If you have weekend or evening staff, we can run payroll as well, with submissions to HMRC on or before each payday.

A note on Making Tax Digital

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC through compatible software, followed by a final declaration. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. Qualifying income is gross income, before expenses. Books that are kept up to date each month make the change much easier to live with.

Questions from Kentish Town

Do I need an accountant or just a bookkeeper?

Most people need both jobs done: tidy records through the year and correct returns at the end of it. Our AAT-qualified bookkeeper keeps the books, and we prepare and file your tax returns, with year-end and statutory work completed by our Chartered Accountant.

I have never filed a tax return. Where do I start?

If you have started working for yourself, you need to register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year you started in. We can talk you through it on the free call.

My side job brings in less than £1,000 a year. Do I need to register?

Possibly not. There is a £1,000 trading allowance, so if your self-employed income is under that you may not need to register. If you are unsure, ask us on the free call.

Can you take over from my current accountant?

Yes, at any time of year. Our guide to switching accountants explains how the handover works.
