Plain-English bookkeeping for small UK businesses
HomeAreas we coverIslington
VAT, Self Assessment, year-end accounts, Corporation Tax and monthly bookkeeping for the shops, restaurants, consultancies and landlords of Islington, from Angel to Highbury.
Islington fits a lot of small business into a few streets. Upper Street runs from Angel up to Highbury Corner past independent shops, restaurants and bars. Chapel Market trades most days near Angel, and Exmouth Market, on the Clerkenwell side of the borough, is lined with cafés and places to eat. Above and between them are consultancies, studios and plenty of homeowners letting out a flat.
We are a small accountancy practice based next door in Camden, London. We prepare and file VAT returns, Self Assessment tax returns, and for limited companies the year-end accounts and Corporation Tax return, with year-end and statutory work completed by the Chartered Accountant on our team. Monthly bookkeeping keeps the figures behind every return up to date.
Hospitality turns money over quickly. Takings come in every day, suppliers want paying every week and staff costs move with the season. A restaurant or busy shop can reach the VAT threshold sooner than expected, because it is measured on turnover, not profit.

If you run a consultancy, design studio or small practice from Angel or Highbury, the books are often simpler than a restaurant's but the filing dates are just as fixed. A limited company needs annual accounts at Companies House 9 months after its year end, Corporation Tax paid 9 months and 1 day after it and a CT600 return within 12 months. Directors taking dividends may need a personal Self Assessment return too.
We prepare the company accounts and the personal returns together, so the figures agree and you only have to answer our questions once.
If you let out a flat or a house, your rental income goes on your Self Assessment return. Keeping a simple record of rent received, repairs, agent fees and other costs through the year makes that return quick to prepare. If your property income is small, there is a £1,000 property allowance that may mean you have little or nothing to report.
From April 2026, landlords and sole traders with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC under Making Tax Digital, with the threshold falling to £30,000 from April 2027. Our page for landlords goes into more detail.
